Synthetic agent, chatbot or call center: which one fits a lender?
A chatbot answers questions with scripted replies. A call center puts people on the process. A synthetic agent runs the process inside your systems — it looks things up, records them, follows up — and hands off to a person when it should. For most lenders the right mix is agents for volume and people for judgment.

What is each one, in a sentence?
- Chatbot: software that replies in a conversation from a decision tree or an FAQ base. Good at pointing people in the right direction; limited the moment something has to happen in a system.
- Call center: a team of people, in-house or outsourced, that handles or reaches out to customers with scripts and tools. Human judgment included — along with the shift schedules, turnover and supervision limits of any team.
- Synthetic agent: an AI agent with a defined role — customer service, collections, origination — that understands what people say, reads and updates your systems, follows rules it can't override and escalates to a person. It runs on an operating system that monitors it and can stop it: at InnovaBlack, Synthetic OS.
How do they compare on what matters to a supervised institution?
| Dimension | Chatbot | Call center | Synthetic agent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handles open-ended questions | Only what was anticipated | Yes | Yes |
| Takes action in your systems | Rarely | Yes, by hand | Yes, with scoped permissions |
| Availability | Always on | By shift | Always on, within the rules (e.g., collections contact hours) |
| Consistency with policy | High, within the script | Varies by person | High: rules live in the system |
| Evidence of every contact | Basic logs | Recordings and notes, sampled | Complete, searchable log of every action |
| Judgment on hard cases | No | Yes | Escalates to a person with full context |
| How it grows | A bigger decision tree | Hiring and training | More processes and rules |
When is a chatbot enough?
When the job is orientation: hours, general requirements, branch locations, links to online forms. If nobody needs to look up a customer's balance or record anything, a well-built chatbot does the job and is simpler to maintain.
When is a person still the better call?
When the case needs judgment, empathy in a delicate situation, or a decision that commits the institution: a restructuring, a complex complaint, a vulnerable customer, a negotiation. And whenever the customer asks for one. A good ecosystem doesn't hide its people — it saves them for where they add the most.
When does a synthetic agent make sense?
When there's volume and the work runs through your systems: payment reminders and early delinquency, balance and payment-reference requests, building loan files, application follow-up, contact-data updates. That's where an agent delivers always-on coverage, applies policy the same way every time and leaves a complete record. Your team runs it from the Agentic Office: they see every conversation, take over the ones they want and stop the agent if needed.
Can you combine them?
That's the most common setup. A model that works well for lenders: the agent handles first contact and the volume, resolves what the rules cover, and hands off anything that needs judgment to a person — on your team or in your call center — with the conversation and the data already pulled together. The person doesn't start from zero and the customer doesn't repeat their story. If you already run a call center, adding an agent doesn't mean shutting it down; the agent clears the queue so your team can give real attention to the cases that need it.
What should you ask any vendor before deciding?
- Can it act in my systems, or only reply? With which permissions?
- Where do I see every conversation and every action, and how do I stop the agent?
- How does it guarantee contact hours, prohibitions and escalations are respected?
- Does it identify itself as an AI agent, or pretend to be a person?
- Who runs and maintains it after go-live?
- Is my data used to train models or mixed with other clients' data?
